How to use it
- Enter the pitch size: copy it from the campsite's own page. If you cannot find it, 10 m x 10 m is a reasonable place to start for a drive-in pitch.
- Save your gear: start from a common size, then correct it to your own measurements. Adding the height and the shape makes the 3D view closer to the real thing.
- Change the view: "Top" for whether it all fits inside the pitch, "Angled" for how items sit relative to each other, "Eye level" for what you will see standing at the entrance. Drag empty space to orbit freely; scroll or pinch to zoom.
- Place and move: drag to move; select an item and arrow keys move it 10 cm, Shift + arrow moves 1 cm. You can rotate too. The view is held still while you are dragging something, so the direction you are pushing it stays predictable.
- Read the verdict: anything other than "Fits" tells you why. Guy-line warnings can usually be solved by re-pitching; two items overlapping cannot. Items that overlap seen from above but sit at different heights are not counted as a problem.
What the verdict means
Sticks out of the site: something reaches past the pitch boundary once guy lines are counted. That means a neighbour's pitch or a path.
Two items overlap: physically impossible. Move one, or turn it. Height counts here, so a table under a tarp — overlapping from above but clear in reality — is not flagged. Something taller than the canopy's lower edge trying to fit underneath it is.
Different height, so they do not touch: they overlap seen from above, but one of them is overhead, so the layout works. It is not a problem and the verdict stays "Fits" — the note is there so you can tell it was noticed rather than missed.
Something sits on the guy-line area: an item is standing where a guy line runs. Usually solvable by changing the angle or length of the line.
Guy-line areas cross: the mildest warning. It often works in practice with shared pegs, but it is a trip hazard.
What this planner does not know
It checks boxes with a width, a depth and a height, and nothing else. Slope, trees and rocks, ground you cannot peg into, the room a car needs to turn, and where the real boundary runs are all outside it. "Fits" here does not guarantee it fits on the day. Use it as a draft before you pitch.
The 3D view is not a model of your actual gear. It takes a rough silhouette — dome, ridge, bell tent and so on — and stretches it to the width, depth and height you typed in. Curved fabric and real slopes are not reproduced. The tarp poles are drawn so it reads as a tarp, but they are not part of the check: a layout that puts a peg or a box exactly where a pole stands will not be flagged.
Height is handled deliberately unevenly. Item bodies are checked by height; guy lines are not. A guy line runs diagonally from the eave down to a peg in the ground, so it occupies every height in between. Something low may in practice pass under a line, but that depends on how you pitch it, so the planner errs towards warning you.
Of the preset sizes, only two are stated as fact: the Japanese kei-car class (3.40 m long, 1.48 m wide, 2.00 m tall) and the 5-number compact class (4.70 m long, 1.70 m wide, 2.00 m tall), both of which are legal maximums. Everything else is a rough guide, not the real size of any particular product — heights and headroom especially, since they change with how you pitch. Measure your own gear if it matters.
The second group, "Maker's published dimensions", is different: every number there is copied from the manufacturer's own product page. Picking one shows the heading the maker uses, the wording exactly as published, the date it was checked, and a link to the source. The list covers current models from major Japanese makers. It says nothing about what sells. There is no primary source for that, so there is no ranking here and the order means nothing. Makers that do not publish a pitched footprint are simply left out, however widely quoted their numbers are — Snow Peak's product pages give packed size only, so none of their tents appear.
Even for those products, guy-line span and headroom remain estimates. Not one manufacturer publishes either, because both change with how you pitch. So a single product mixes published figures with estimated ones, and the note shown when you pick it says which is which. Dimensions also change with model updates, so anything altered after the check date is not reflected here.

Typical pitch sizes in Japan
Naming and size vary by campsite, but Japanese pitches tend to fall into a few bands. Use these to get your bearings before booking, and always check the campsite's own figures.
- Drive-in pitch (car included): often around 10 m x 10 m. Once the car is parked, what is left feels closer to 7 m square.
- Tent pitch (car parked elsewhere): around 7 m x 7 m. A two-room tent plus a tarp fills this quickly.
- Free pitch: no marked boundaries, so it is flexible — but on a busy weekend your neighbours decide your spacing. Planning with guy lines included avoids most of the trouble.

Frequently asked questions
- Where do I find the size of a pitch?
- Most campsites list it on their own site or booking page, often as something like "about 10 m x 10 m". If it is not listed, ask the site directly. Nullcamp does not hold per-pitch dimensions, so this planner works only from the numbers you type in.
- How much room should I leave for guy lines and vestibules?
- It depends on the tent. Around 0.8 m per side is typical for a dome, and 1.0-1.3 m for a two-room or bell tent. The preset numbers are rough guides, so pitch your own tent once and measure it if you need to be exact.
- Where is my saved gear stored?
- Only in the browser you are using. Nothing is sent anywhere, so it does not carry over to another device or browser, and clearing your browser data removes it.
- If it says everything fits, can I be sure it will?
- No. The planner treats everything as a box with a width, a depth, and a height. Slope, trees, ground you cannot peg into, and the room a car needs to turn are not included. Treat the result as a draft, not a guarantee.
- Does a table under a tarp count as an overlap?
- No. Height is taken into account, so if the canopy is overhead and you can walk under it, the planner says the two are at different heights and lets it pass. Guy lines are the exception: a line runs diagonally from the eave down to a peg in the ground, so it occupies every height along the way and is never exempted. Anything standing on a guy line is still flagged.
- How far apart should the car and the tent be?
- That depends on the campsite's own rules, which cover things like where you may light a fire, pitch boundaries, and keeping paths clear. This planner only checks dimensions, so check the site's rules separately.
