Free Campsite Gear Checklist: Water, Toilets, and Lighting

Check water, toilets, lighting, and waste rules before using a free campsite, then pack safe backups for anything unavailable or unverified.

Bottom line: free does not describe the facilities

A free campsite may or may not provide potable water, toilets, lighting, or waste collection. If Nullcamp says a facility is unlisted, do not treat that as confirmed absence; verify the operator's current information first.

Pack backups only for what is unavailable or still unverified. This guide compares categories rather than claiming one product is best.

Water, toilets, lighting, and waste

Do not assume a tap is safe to drink from. Compare water containers by trip capacity, filled weight, cleaning, and pack size. Compare portable toilet kits by bag count, sealing, storage, and the disposal rules at your destination.

Split lighting between a hands-free headlamp and a separate lantern, with backup power. Bring enough sealed bags to carry all waste home if collection is unavailable.

Primary safety sources

Japan's Ministry of Agriculture gives 3 litres per person per day as a disaster-planning reference for drinking and cooking water; camping needs vary with weather, cooking, and facilities. The Cabinet Office and Ministry of the Environment provide guidance on portable toilets and carrying used kits out. Sources checked 2026-07-14: MAFF water planning, Cabinet Office toilet stock guidance, and MOE portable toilet guidance.

How to compare and check before departure

Compare trip capacity, packed and filled weight, disposal, runtime, weather rating, and backup availability. Verify prices, stock, and specifications on the manufacturer and merchant pages.

Before leaving, check the official update date, potable water, toilet hours, lighting, waste rules, fire rules, and a bad-weather backup.
