How to Think About Camping Car Rental Costs in Japan

Driving onto a pitch changes the price at the same campsite, and roadside stations are not lodging. Verified public sources show where campervan trip costs actually move.

The price changes the moment you drive onto the pitch

At Shibetsu Umi-no-Koen Auto Campground, the town's official page lists a free-pitch fee of 380 yen for up to six people and 770 yen for seven or more, while an auto site costs 3,770 yen per plot. Walking your tent in or parking your vehicle differs by roughly ten times at the same site.

Danpara Park Campground in Muroran shows the same pattern: 3,000 yen per group on a free pitch for up to six people, against 4,500 yen per group on an auto site for up to five.

A campervan almost always lands on the auto-site side. Check what the sites you plan to use charge for an auto plot before you compare rental quotes.

Do not budget around sleeping at roadside stations

Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism states that napping in your vehicle to recover from driving fatigue is acceptable at a michi-no-eki roadside station, but that using the parking area and other public space as lodging is in principle discouraged.

The same notice adds that some roadside stations do provide separate parking space intended for overnight stays, and asks drivers to check each station's own website. Overnight-capable stations are the exception, not the rule.

Budgeting zero for accommodation means hunting for a paid campsite after you arrive. Treat a nap and a night's stay as different things and fix your overnight stop in advance.

Tolls follow a vehicle class, not the size you perceive

NEXCO East defines ordinary and medium vehicles as separate toll classes, with medium covering goods vehicles under 8t gross weight and under 5t payload with three axles or fewer, along with microbuses. Which class your rental falls into changes the toll over the same distance.

The same page notes that special-purpose vehicles registered under the 8 number plate can be hard to classify, and that staff may ask you to present the vehicle inspection certificate. Campervans commonly fall into that group.

When you collect a rental, ask where the inspection certificate is kept in the vehicle so a toll booth request does not hold you up.

Fewer sites officially allow sleeping in a vehicle than you expect

Kiritappu Misaki Campground in Hamanaka is one of the few that names it directly: its fee table lists tent stays and sleeping in a vehicle as free. Even so, the town notes that while no reservation is required, you must fill in an application form at Kiritappu Onsen Yuyu, a hot-spring facility away from the campground.

The season runs only from 10 June to 12 October 2026. Danpara Park Campground is listed as operating in 2026 on Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays and the Obon period, from May through September.

The sites Nullcamp can confirm as campervan-friendly are still concentrated in Hokkaido. Choosing a destination first and looking for a pitch afterwards can leave you with nothing nearby.

A quote is not just the rental fee plus fuel

Put together, the cost is the rental charge plus auto-site fees, the toll difference your vehicle class creates, and whatever you spend rebooking when your first choice does not work out. Distance charges and insurance terms vary by operator, so confirm the breakdown before signing.

The avoidable part is what you spend by leaving without a plan. In a region such as Hokkaido, where campervan-friendly sites cluster, holding two or three candidates in advance makes the day's spending far more predictable.

If you want to build free nights into the trip, note that free campsites carry their own application rules and short seasons.
